My AP Portfolio will focus on abstract and surrealist nature combined with various cultural patterns. I am interested in studying cultures throughout the world and the meanings of symbols in cultural patterns. I am also interested in the beauty in nature, and would like to weave cultural patterns with significance into surreal and abstract pieces of nature. The artwork of Frida Kahlo and Octavio Ocampo are very interesting to me, as both artists painted nature and humans interweaving, and I would like to do the same with nature and cultural patterns.
My Focus Questions:
What makes a piece abstract or surreal? How can I make this composition interesting, and what inspires me?
What can I study about color theory that will help make my patterns more appealing and abstract?
I will study patterns from various cultures around the world and research their significance. I can also study patterns from fashion magazines that are popular.
What specific drawing/ painting techniques can be used to emphasize patterns? (solid brush strokes, stippling, bright color combinations, etc)
I will use a variety of media, but will tend to focus on acrylic paint, pen & ink, copic marker.
